His life
Born on 25 April 1214 at Poissy, Louis IX came to the throne at the age of twelve, under the regency of his mother Blanche of Castile. Deeply devout and driven by an ideal of justice, he devoted his reign to reforming the kingdom of France and to promoting peace between Christian nations. He died on 25 August 1270 at Tunis, during the Eighth Crusade, and was canonised in 1297 by Pope Boniface VIII.
His reforms of justice
Saint Louis is best known for his judicial reforms. He established the presumption of innocence, banned trial by ordeal, and built a royal justice open to all. The famous image of the king dispensing justice beneath an oak at Vincennes stands for his commitment to fair and direct justice, with no intermediary.
He also created the royal Enquêteurs, charged with gathering his subjects' complaints against abuses by local lords. That step, revolutionary for its time, speaks of his constant concern for the wellbeing of his people.
His humanist legacy
Beyond his political reforms, Saint Louis left a deeply humanist legacy. He founded almshouses and hospitals — among them the Hôpital des Quinze-Vingts for the blind — and advanced teaching. His vision of power in the service of the people, and not the reverse, still shapes thinking about just governance.
His influence on French and European law is considerable. The principles he introduced — presumption of innocence, right of appeal, adversarial inquiry — have become pillars of our modern legal systems.
